Shifts

Find and take sitting shifts, post shifts for a dog, and file a sitting log after each shift you sit.

Read the coverage week

Board and members whose role takes sitting shifts

Each shift’s color shows its state: Open, Urgent or Assigned, as listed under the week. A paw marks your own dog’s shifts.

Board sees every shift. Everyone else sees the shifts that still need a sitter, and the shifts assigned to them.

  1. Open Shifts from the menu. Coverage shows a week of shifts, one column per day.
  2. Press Previous week or Next week to move, and This week to come back.
  3. Press a shift to open its page.

Apply for a shift

Members whose role takes sitting shifts

You cannot apply for a shift you posted or for your own dog. You can hold at most two upcoming assigned shifts at a time. You see how many others have applied, not who.

You have two tries at the notes check, and every answer must be right in one go. After two misses, you can no longer take that shift. If you withdraw and apply again, you answer the check again.

A shift offer email has its own Apply for this shift button that works without signing in. The same rules hold, so read the dog’s notes first.

  1. Open Shifts from the menu. Find the shift under Shifts you can take, and press Open shift.
  2. Press View puppy details and notes, and press Got it on every section of the dog’s notes.
  3. Go back to the shift. If it shows the dog’s notes check, answer the questions and press Check my answers.
  4. Press Apply for this shift.
  5. Press Withdraw my application on the shift’s page if you can no longer sit. You can withdraw until a sitter is assigned or the shift starts.

How a sitter is picked

The club chooses on the Club page whether shifts are filled automatically or by hand. Board members who can switch filling for one shift change it under Filling on the shift’s page.

Automatic filling picks a sitter a set number of days before the shift starts, shown as Days ahead. It picks the applicant with the fewest sitting hours; between equals, whoever applied first. It skips anyone who cannot take the shift. If nobody can be picked, the shift is marked Urgent, and the next person who applies is assigned right away.

A shift filled by hand stays open until Board assigns a sitter, and is marked Urgent if it starts without one. Board members who can assign sitters by hand can pick a sitter for any shift before it starts:

  1. Open the shift’s page.
  2. In Applications, press Assign a sitter manually.
  3. Press the Assign button on the card of the person you choose.

Post a shift

Raisers, for their own dog, and Board members who can post shifts

Days ahead, under Filling, sets how many days before the shift a sitter is picked automatically. Leave it blank to use the club’s usual number. It is shown only when the club fills shifts automatically.

A repeating post makes a separate shift for each date, up to a year out. Members who can take the shift get a notice, one for a whole series.

The dog’s profile must be published first, and a dog cannot have two shifts at the same time.

  1. Open Shifts from the menu and press Post a shift.
  2. Choose the Puppy. A raiser’s own dog is already filled in.
  3. Type the Location, and set the Start and End.
  4. Choose how often in Repeats to post a series, and the last day in Repeats until.
  5. Write anything the sitter needs to know in Shift notes.
  6. Open Sitting-log questions to change what the sitting log asks for this post.
  7. Press Post shift.

Change or cancel a shift

The member who posted the shift, and Board

Only open or urgent shifts can be changed, and only before they start. Moving the time sends a notice to everyone who has applied.

Canceling withdraws every application and sends a notice to Board, the dog’s raiser, the assigned sitter and everyone who applied. The notice includes the reason, if you typed one.

Board members who can keep members off shifts use Restricted sitters: choose a Member, choose This shift only or Every shift for the dog, and press Restrict. That person no longer sees the shift and cannot be assigned to it.

  1. Open the shift’s page.
  2. Press a detail under Coverage, such as When, Where or Shift notes, and change it. Press Enter or click away to save.
  3. Cancel the shift under Cancel shift: type a Reason if you like, press Cancel shift, and confirm.

Change the questions for one shift

The dog’s raiser and Board

A dog’s Sitter-check questions and Sitting-log questions are set on the dog’s page. On a shift’s page you can change them for that shift only.

Sitters answer the sitter-check questions before they apply. Every sitting log asks Overall, What happened, and when the sitting started and finished; sitting-log questions are extra questions on top of those.

A sitting log that is already filed keeps the questions it was filed with.

  1. Open the shift’s page and open Sitter-check questions or Sitting-log questions.
  2. Press Add question, or change or remove the questions shown.
  3. Press Save for this shift.
  4. Press Use the dog’s usual questions (the button shows the dog’s name) to go back to the dog’s own set.

File a sitting log

The sitter who covered the shift

You can file the log once the shift has ended. It is due by 11:59 PM, a number of days later that the club chooses. A late log is still saved, but the shift earns no sitting hours.

After filing, press any part of the log to correct it. The log then shows when it was edited, and a log filed on time stays on time.

The dog’s raiser reads your log, and so do Board members who can read sitting logs.

  1. Open Shifts from the menu. Your sitting logs, at the top, lists the logs you owe.
  2. Press a shift in that list.
  3. Choose Overall and write What happened.
  4. Answer any extra questions the raiser added.
  5. Check Started and Finished. Change them only if the shift ran longer or shorter.
  6. Press File this sitting log.

See your sitting hours and history

Members whose role takes sitting shifts

Hours come from the start and finish times on your sitting logs. A shift with no log, or a log filed late, earns no hours.

Raisers also see My dog’s hours: the hours other members have sat their dog, counted the same way.

Your sitting history lists up to your 100 most recent shifts, each with its sitting log.

  1. Open Shifts from the menu. My sitting hours shows your total.
  2. Press See every shift you have sat to open Your sitting history.
  3. Type a dog or place in Find a sat shift, or sort by Newest first, Oldest first or Logs owed first.
